Of the five subspecies of wild turkeys, only the Eastern, Rio Grande and Merriam’s wild turkeys occur in Texas. Notice that Rio Grande and Merriam’s wild turkeys have hybridized in far western Texas.

The Pineywoods are bordered on the south by the Gulf Coastal Prairies and Marshes and Post Oak Savannah and extend east and north into Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

There are three subspecies of wild turkey in Texas—the eastern turkey (Meleagris gallopovo silvestris), Merriam’s Turkey (Meleagris gallopovo merriami) and the Rio Grande turkey (Meleagris gallopovo intermedia).
Rio Grande wild turkeys. Over the past few years, TPWD has been experimenting with Rio Grande wild turkey restockings along the Trinity River watershed. The Trinity River marks the historic interchange between Rio Grades and Easterns.
It is the only state where one can find native populations of three of the five subspecies of wild turkeys—the Eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris), the Rio Grande wild turkey (M. g. intermedia), and the Merriam’s wild turkey (M. g. merriami).
