Try deleteing the partition in gparted and leaving the space unallocated. Then let XP create the partitions on install. If it still errors, you might need to find a tool to run diagnostics on the disk. Most drive manufacturers offer them on their tech support sites. –

31 Ιουλ 2015 · I tried the fix described in Repairing Windows XP in Eight Commands (since my CPU does not have an XD buffer overflow protection, I did not set /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as OS Load Option). This did not work. I then found another fix for the problem on hardwareanalysis.com:
The simplest way to work around this XP installer bug would be to run "sudo cfdisk" in Ubuntu and just partition drive 2 manually, create a single large ntfs partition, then restart the XP installer.

12 Μαρ 2011 · to reconcile the file system with the master file table you should run a chkdsk /r at the disk prompt via the recovery console. also, you should run a fixboot at the prompt for good measure and to ensure you can boot the hard disk after booting up via the cd. Status - Off line.
31 Οκτ 2012 · I do a complete fresh install of the XP SP3 machine using a SP3 disk. It does the install, but during the configuration section it gets stuck right at the beginning at 39 minutes remaining. I have tried both a burned and certified dell sp3 disk.
