The Witte Iron Works was a maker of hit and miss engines. The company was started in 1870 by August Witte in Kansas City. His son Ed Witte built the company's first crude gasoline engine in 1886. In 1894 gas engines would be the company's primary focus. [1]

1 Σεπ 2004 · The Witte name is well known among old-engine fans. Based in Kansas City, Mo., the Witte Engine Works manufactured its first engine about 1885. The engine here, a throttling governor Type B of probably 5 HP, was featured in a Witte Engine Works catalog.

The engine, a 4 HP Witte headless with battery ignition and a clutch pulley, originally powered the saws, planers, etc, plus a cider mill and a buzz saw through a line shaft. The buzz saw was outside the building and was run by a belt from the line shaft through the door of the engine room.
