5 Ιαν 2024 · Measuring 1,642 meters at its deepest point, Lake Baikal in Russia is the world’s deepest lake. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Baikal is also considered the world’s oldest lake, with scientific evidence showing that it is between 25 and 30 million years old.
At 636 km (395 mi) long and 79 km (49 mi) wide, Lake Baikal has the largest surface area of any freshwater lake in Asia, at 31,722 km 2 (12,248 sq mi), and is the deepest lake in the world at 1,642 metres (5,387 feet; 898 fathoms).
Lake Baikal, in Siberia, holds the distinction of being both the deepest lake in the world and the largest freshwater lake, holding more than 20% of the unfrozen fresh water on the surface of Earth. It is also the oldest freshwater lake in the world, with an estimated age of 20 million to 25 million years.
