20 Ιουλ 2024 · The Amazon Basin is the part of South America drained by the Amazon River and its branches. It is low-lying in relation to sea level. The river has its origins high up in the Andes of Peru and Ecuador. Most of this drainage basin (54%) is in Brazil, including the lower part.
Its plant and animal life is remarkably rich. Almost three fourths of all the types of plants in the world grow there. The animals include monkeys, sloths, anteaters, armadillos, anacondas, toucans, and huge rodents called capybaras. The flesh-eating piranha is among the river’s many fish.
