Today, 45% of the world’s population lives in cities, while 35% live in towns and semi-dense areas. Only 20% live in rural areas. Today there are more than 11 thousand cities worldwide – compared with 6,400 cities in 1975.
In the chart, we see estimates of urban and rural populations in absolute terms, projected through to 2050. Projected population growth based on the UN's medium fertility scenario. By 2050, the global population is projected to increase to around 9.8 billion.
