Some examples of writing taking place in math class have included writing a narrative story with a reference to a mathematics problem (Carter, 2009), describing who’s who in mathematics (Rothstein et al., 2003), writing a mathematical argument (Kiuhara et al., 2020), and writing proofs (Güler & Dikici, 2014).
10 Φεβ 2021 · Students using the RDW process first read the whole problem to get an idea of what’s happening in the story. Then, they alternate between reading and drawing until the drawing helps them understand the problem and see how to solve it. Finally, students solve the problem and write the answer.
Have you ever heard your students say, “Ugh, why do I have to write about how I solved the math problem?” If students can TELL you what they did to solve the problem, they can WRITE about it. It seems like a daunting task to get students writing, but step by step you can do it.
18 Δεκ 2016 · This structured word problem routine gives students the ability to write about the problem and analyze their process. By breaking down the “work” area into numbers, question, equation and model, students are able to see how the process moves through stages rather than them just “knowing” the answer.
Realize how to engage elementary students in reasoning through mathematical writing in this Teaching Children Mathematics article in their 2017 Focus Issue addressing Learning Mathematics Through Reasoning and Problem Solving.
Give examples. Describe any patterns they discover. Show/explain the steps taken to solve a problem. Explain their findings in a clear and organized manner. Restate the question. Answer all parts of the question. Check that what they have written makes sense.
Teaching Students How to Write Math Problems. The only thing more valuable to a developing mathematician than practicing solving word problems is writing them. Of course, learning how to solve word problems efficiently, accurately, and flexibly are crucial in building students’ math skills.
