Rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum) was designated the official state flower of West Virginia in 1903. The rhododendron beat honeysuckle and wild rose by more than 15,000 votes in a poll of public schoolchildren from across the state.
The Rhododendron maximum or "Big Laurel" became the official State Flower of West Virginia by House Joint Resolution No.19 which was adopted by the Legislature on January 29, 1903 with recommendation from the Governor and a vote by public school students.
