At the outbreak of the First World War, the Schutztruppe in German East Africa was organised into 14 field companies (Feldkompanien) with 2,500 men under arms, with headquarters at the capital Dar es Salaam. Including carriers and labourers, the force had about 14,000 personnel.
22 Νοε 2021 · One hundred Africans were brought from the African colonies to Germany for the 1896 Colonial Exhibition in Berlin. Some of these men stayed on in Germany, took German wives and became naturalized German subjects.
Between 1891 and 1894 colonial forces, named “Schutztruppe”, were established in the German colonies in East Africa, Cameroon, and Southwest Africa. They formed a third military branch alongside the army and the navy and were composed of Germans and Africans. The Schutztruppe’s main task was to conquer the colonies by force.

During World War I, askari of the German East African colonial army, the Schutztruppe, gained a reputation as highly effective and dedicated troops. Following Germany’s defeat, a “loyal askari” myth developed that celebrated their service to Germany, while ignoring the negative effects of colonial rule on the peoples of German East Africa.
Thousands of soldiers from around the United States began their military service at Camp Sherman, located in Chillicothe, Ohio. Camp Sherman was one of thirty-two training camps used in World War I and was the third largest in the nation.
