British Cyprus was bombed by the Axis powers on several occasions during World War II. The island was weakly defended against aerial attack. It had no anti-aircraft artillery and very few aircraft. [1] The main threat came from the Italian Dodecanese.
Following the breakdown of peace talks, Turkish forces enlarged their original beachhead in August 1974 resulting in the capture of approximately 36% of the island. The ceasefire line from August 1974 became the United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus and is commonly referred to as the Green Line.

Clerides, the future president of the Republic of Cyprus served as a RAF sergeant. He joined in 1939 and in 1942 he took part in the bombing campaign against Hamburg. He was a gunner aboard a Wellington bomber. On 26 July 1942, he was wounded when his plane was hit while on a raid. Clerides parachuted down safely
