  1. This book provides an introduction, at academic level, into the field of surveying and mapping. The book has been compiled based on hand-outs and readers written for the third-year course Surveying and Mapping, in the bachelor program Civil Engineering at Delft University of Technology.

  2. There are five types of levelling instruments used in surveying such as dumpy level, tilting level, cushing’s level and cooke’s reversible level.

  3. Y Level. Y level or Wye-level consists y-shaped frames which supports the telescope. Telescope cane be removed from the y-shaped supports by releasing clamp screws provided. These y-shaped frames are arranged to vertical spindle which helps to cause the rotation of telescope. Compared to dumpy level, adjustments can be rapidly tested in y- level.

  4. Surveying made easy. Karl Zeiske. Introduction. This booklet will tell you about the basic principles of surveying. The most important instruments for surveying are levels and total stations; they are intended for routine survey tasks. Anyone wishing to know how and where they are used will find the answers here.

  5. There are two types of surveying: Plane surveying: Earth surface is considered a plane of x-y dimensions. Z-dimension (height) referenced to the mass spherical surface of the earth (Mean Sea Level). Most engineering and property survey are plane survey correction to curvature is made for long strips (e.g. Highway).

  6. 1. OLDER TOPOGRAPHIC SURVEYING METHODS. This section provides an overview of the past and present instruments and methods used to perform topographic surveys of sites, facilities, or infrastructure.

  7. Surveyors use equipment such as total stations, GNSS systems, 3D laser scanners, mobile mapping sensors, detection systems, digital lasers and levels, GIS collectors, and field and office surveying software to measure, create maps, 3D models and much more.
