Upon a closer look, the cockpit seemed to be that of a Boeing B-17 bomber grafted on. What I was looking at was a Shanghai Yunshunji ("Transport Airplane") Y-10. I was excited to learn about a new large airliner, even though this 1980 aircraft was essentially a product of 1950s and 1960s technology.
5 Ιουν 2024 · The Y-10 more closely matched the Boeing 720 in capacity and airframe size, but the Boeing 707 was in range. The Y-10 has a fuselage length of 42.9 meters, compared to the Boeing 707-320's 46.6 meters and the Boeing 720's 41.7 meters. The picture below shows the Boeing 720 for comparison.

With the Shanghai Y-10, China hoped to show the world how it could build a modern four-jet airliner as the 1980s dawned. Instead, despite the help of Western technology, only one example ever flew — and it was already out-of-date.
