Yazoo City is the county seat of Yazoo County, Mississippi, United States. It was named after the Yazoo River, which, in turn was named by the French explorer Robert La Salle in 1682 as "Rivière des Yazous" in reference to the Yazoo tribe living near the river's mouth.

Article History. Yazoo City, city, seat (1848) of Yazoo county, west-central Mississippi, U.S. It lies along the Yazoo River, 47 miles (76 km) northwest of Jackson. Founded as a planned community in 1826, it was later called Manchester; it was renamed for the Yazoo Indians in 1839.
Laid out in 1830 as Manchester, it became Yazoo City in 1841 and took the county seat from Benton in 1848. When the first leg of the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad was completed in 1885, it expanded the town’s reach into the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta.
Yazoo County represents the culmination of a myriad of cultures, from vanished Native America civilization to Civil War history, African-American contributions and Delta Blues, to stately Victorian architecture and captivating Southern heritage.
Historical Overview. Early Jewish Settlers. According to local history, the first Jew in Yazoo City was Louis Rosenberg, reportedly an ordained rabbi who arrived sometime before 1850 from Posen, Poland. Despite his religious background, he quickly assimilated, marrying a non-Jewish woman named Sarah Sayers, with whom he had four children.
