24 Φεβ 2019 · He is revered along with his contemporary, Tu Fu, as one of the two greatest Chinese poets. The great Chinese poet Li Po was born in 701 and grew up in western China, in Sichuan province near Chengdu.
Li Bai or Li Po (701-762) was a Chinese poet who lived during the Tang Dynasty. His name was traditionally pronounced Li Bo or Li Po (depending on the romanisation), hence the familiar name Li Po by which he has long been known in the West.
His family background may have had something to do with his failure to become an official: Li Po’s birthplace is unknown, but he was certainly not from an elite aristocratic family. Some scholars speculate that he was born in modern-day Kyrgyzstan. With no hope for an official career, Li Po spent much of his life traveling around the empire.
14 Μαΐ 2018 · Li Po was probably born in central Asia, where his ancestors had lived in exile since the early 7th century. His father took the family back to China about 705 and settled down at Mien-chou in Szechwan, where the poet grew up.

Despite his wanderlust, his poetry reveals little about the inner-workings of the poet himself. Around 742 he was appointed to a government office in the service of literature.

Li Po, the legend, was eight feet tall. Born in the year 701, he was, in early manhood, perhaps a knight errant, perhaps a brigand. He was initiated by a Taoist mystic, married for money, and was invited to Ch’ang-an, the capital of the world’s brightest empire in that empire’s brightest moment.
