Writer Peter Viertel (1920-2007) was an international writer, former US Marine, Hollywood script-doctor and novelist. He was born in Dresden, Germany and died in Marbella, Spain.

Screenwriter, novelist, and memoirist. Born in Germany, Viertel was raised in Hollywood, where his parents worked as a film director-screenwriter and an actress-screenwriter. From an early age he rubbed elbows with the luminaries of the film world on both sides of the camera.
Peter Viertel. Screenwriter. 16 November 1920 to 4 November 2007. Best known for scripting The African Queen (1951), Viertel’s grim experience on location inspired his novel White Hunter, Black Heart, filmed in 1990.
