Power for the Z-19 stems from 2 x Zhuzhou Aeroengine Factory WZ-8A turboshaft engines - the same as featured on the Z-9B series and a copy of the French Turbomeca Arriel turboshaft.
Built on the French AS365/Chinese Z-9, the Z-19 has roughly the same tail structure and engine placement - the Z-19's defining physical features are its stepped cockpit and sleek fuselage design.
The Harbin Z-19 is a modern light reconnaissance and attack helicopter of Chinese origin. The Z-19 fills the role between the Z-9W series of armed utility helicopters and the heavier and larger Z-10 used as a dedicated attack helicopter.
The Z-19 light attack and reconnaissance helicopter features a conventional, stealthy design integrating a trimmed forward fuselage and a tandem cockpit. It also has a low acoustic signature and can execute operations under difficult weather and environmental conditions.
The Z-19 is an upgraded tandem seat version of the Harbin Z-9W (similar to the development of the Bell AH-1 Cobra from the UH-1), using mechanical components derived from the Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin series, as the Z-9 series are license-built versions of the Dauphin helicopters.
