  1. 11 Δεκ 2022 · Zinc is an important cofactor in the body and is essential for normal function; however, increased levels of zinc can become toxic. Three types of exposure can lead to toxicity: inhalation, oral, and dermal.

  2. This chapter contains a description of the toxic effects that have been associated with exposures to high levels of zinc and selected zinc compounds by the inhalation, oral, and dermal routes. Specifically, zinc chloride, zinc oxide, zinc sulfate, and zinc sulfide will be discussed.

  3. Toxicity is rare. Ingesting doses of elemental zinc ranging from 100 to 150 mg/day for prolonged periods interferes with copper metabolism and causes low blood copper levels, red blood cell microcytosis, neutropenia, and impaired immunity; higher doses should be given only for short periods of time and the patient followed closely.

  5. Zinc deficiency is frequent in the elderly and leads to changes similar to those that occur in oxidative inflammatory aging (oxi-inflamm-aging) and immunosenescence. The possible benefits of zinc supplementation to enhance immune function are discussed. Keywords: zinc, aging, immunosenescence.

  6. 12 Ιουν 2009 · Consequently, oral zinc supplementation demonstrates the potential to improve immunity and efficiently downregulates chronic inflammatory responses in the elderly. These data indicate that a wide prevalence of marginal zinc deficiency in elderly people may contribute to immunosenescence.

  7. 11 Ιαν 2022 · Zinc deficiency is rarely severe and usually congenital. Milder zinc deficiency is usually acquired and is common in older people. Manifestations of zinc deficiency may be subtle and can affect many organ systems. Delayed wound healing, impaired taste, loss of appetite, hair loss, fertility issue...
