Zone 9 is a collective of nine independent Amharic language bloggers who aim “to create independent narratives” in the east African country of Ethiopia. Their moto is “We blog because we care”.
1 Δεκ 2015 · Founded in May 2012, Zone 9 took its name from Ethiopia’s prisons, which are organised into eight zones, with Zone 8 usually used for journalists and dissidents. “Ethiopia is Zone 9,” said Chala. “Ethiopia is a big prison.” The blog was written in Amharic, and covered political and social issues.
11 Οκτ 2019 · Zone 9 comprises nine bloggers: Zelalem Kibret, Tesfalem Waldyes, Asmamaw Hailegiorgis, Mahlet Fantahun, Edom Kassaye, Natnael Feleke, Atnaf Berhane, Abel Wabela, and Hailu. In 2014, they were arrested by the Ethiopian government and faced terrorism charges, a move which prompted backlash online.
17 Ιουλ 2014 · The detainees had all worked with Zone9, a collective blog that covered social and political issues in Ethiopia and promoted human rights and government accountability. Many of them were also contributors to Global Voices.
In April 2014, six bloggers associated with the online group called “Zone 9” were arrested and charged with violations of the country’s much-criticized Anti-Terror Proclamation. Detained along with the Zone 9 Bloggers were three journalists who were socially-connected to the bloggers.
14 Φεβ 2018 · After 539 days of detention, the four Zone 9 bloggers still held in Ethiopia were today found innocent of all terrorism charges. Befequadu was found guilty of inciting violence based on a confession obtained during his imprisonment, but was released, having already served his term.
