Deeply divided over slavery, the country was at the brink of a civil war that threatened to split North from South. Combining his roles as statesman and commander in chief, Lincoln led the North to victory and held the Union together. Along the way he brought an end to slavery in the United States.
Lincoln’s main goal in the war was to save the Union. However, he knew he had to settle the slavery question in order for the United States to survive. In 1862, Lincoln promised freedom for enslaved people in any Confederate state that did not return to the Union that year.
