Activin is produced in the gonads, pituitary gland, placenta, and other organs: In the ovarian follicle, activin increases FSH binding and FSH-induced aromatization. It participates in androgen synthesis enhancing LH action in the ovary and testis. In the male, activin enhances spermatogenesis.
Activin was discovered in the 1980’s as a gonadal protein that stimulated FSH release from pituitary gonadotropes and was thought of as a reproductive hormone. In the ensuing decades many additional activities of activin were described and it was found to be produced in a wide variety of cell types at nearly all stages of development.
25 Απρ 2016 · Since its initial discovery as an FSH stimulating hormone, activin A is now known for its multifaceted roles in reproductive biology, embryonic development and the control of inflammation and fibrosis in addition to other important physiological and pathological processes.
1 Ιουλ 2016 · Since their original discovery as regulators of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion and erythropoiesis, the TGF-β family members activin and inhibin have been shown to participate in a variety of biological processes, from the earliest stages of embryonic development to highly specialized f ….

1 Σεπ 2020 · Activin and inhibin signaling modulates germ cell development, follicular development and ovulation. Activin A enhances endometrial receptivity, decidualization and remodeling of the endometrium after menstruation.
15 Αυγ 2012 · Initially isolated from ovarian follicular fluid, activin is best described as a pituitary stimulant for follicle stimulating hormone release (Vale et al., 1986). Activin is an integral member of the large family of transforming growth factor βs (TGF-βs).
