14 Αυγ 2018 · Acute kidney injury (AKI) is characterized by a sudden renal dysfunction with consequent increase of nitrogenous products, hydroelectrolytic and acid–base disorders. Its prevalence is high in hospitalized populations (4.9%–7.2%), especially in intensive care units (ICUs).

6 Αυγ 2022 · Old age was identified as a strong risk factor for acute kidney injury (AKI). Our objectives were to provide estimates of AKI, risk factors and outcomes in patients ≥ 75 years for whom data are scarce.
Acute renal failure (ARF) is the rapid loss of kidney function, occurring over hours or days and resulting in the accumulation of metabolic waste products and the dysregulation of extracellular volume and electrolyte homeostasis. ARF is common, especially among the elderly (≥ 65).

Acute kidney injury ranges from mild to severe. If severe, ongoing and not treated, it can be fatal. But it also can be reversed.
