Aim: Ageism in health care delivery and nursing poses a fundamental threat to health and society. In this commentary, implications of age discrimination are presented to generate an agenda for action in nursing management.
Key issues. Investigations of ageism suggest that discrimination negatively affects health and results in poor health care experiences. Age discrimination is present in nursing, exacerbating workforce shortages and limiting the use of expertise within the profession.
3 Μαρ 2024 · We found evidence on the presence of ageism in older nurses' workplace and the detrimental effects of ageism on older nurses' well-being and continuation of practice. Importantly, we identified a lack of organisational initiatives to address ageism and support older nurses.

In this review article the author describes some of the literature related to ageism in nursing, discusses how ageism can affect the quality of the care that is provided to older adult patients, and explains theories that may help explain ageism in nursing.
