Albufeira is van oorsprong een vissersplaats, maar is de laatste decennia uitgegroeid tot een van de belangrijkste en drukste toeristische badplaatsen van Portugal. De meeste toeristen komen via de luchthaven van Faro , een ritje met de auto van ongeveer 40 minuten.
