Meanwhile, all subsets of the religiously unaffiliated population – a group also known as religious “nones” – have seen their numbers swell.

These are among the reasons why religious “nones” are projected to grow as a share of the U.S. population even in the scenario with no further religious switching.

Nearly one in four Americans (23%) are religiously unaffiliated, and 5% identify with non-Christian religions.
As of 2021, 47% of Americans are members of a church, according to Gallup's survey I mentioned above. This is the lowest percentage Gallup has ever measured in its 80-year history. 73% of U.S. citizens were church members when Gallup first measured that statistic in 1937.
