Suicide risk assessment is a process of estimating the likelihood for a person to attempt or die by suicide. The goal of a thorough risk assessment is to learn about the circumstances of an individual person with regard to suicide, including warning signs, risk factors, and protective factors. [1]
The purpose of this chapter is threefold: To briefly review the psychological factors associated with suicide risk; To describe Beck's scales for assessing mood and suicidality; and, To provide a brief overview of the research conducted among adult populations using these scales.
Discuss how to conduct a thorough suicide risk assessment. Develop a safety plan with clients at risk for suicide. Identify and implement affective, behavioral, and cognitive interventions for suicide prevention. Use imagery exercises as part of relapse prevention.
