My recommendation if you want a gaming laptop for college would be the Zephyrus G14/15 - they have good build quality, performance, and battery life. Finally, regarding 2-in-1s: They aren't bad, per se, but in my opinion they don't have as much value compared to traditional laptops.

Right now I’m leaning towards the MacBook Air, but I wanted to crowd source and see what the general consensus on laptops for college is. I have a razer, a MacBook, a surface pro, and a gaming desktop. MacBook is my favorite for casual use by far. Desktop is unrivaled for productivity.

The laptop I'd recommend to most university students is a Dell Latitude 7390 2-in-1, with an 8th gen i5/i7 and 16 gb of ram. They can be found on eBay in good condition for $300 or less and, like the Surface, has a pen-and-touch screen.
May i recommend samsung galaxy book pro 15.6 I have it for a week. I like its light weight. Long battery and it has mid specs which is more than enough for college. And the screen is awesome. Have a look at the Acer Swift 3 SF314-42-R9YN as it is a great option for your needs.
