The Big Red Machine's archrival were the Los Angeles Dodgers. The two teams often competed for the NL West division title and finished either first or second in every year from 1970 through 1979 with the one exception being 1971.

Bench, Pitching and Coaching While the Big Red Machine was legendary for its starting eight players, the 1976 Reds also had a productive bench. Dan Driessen played first base and left field, slugging .402 with an OPS+ of 116, driving in 44 runs, and stealing 14 bases while only being caught once.
It is this group that powered the Big Red Machine to consecutive World Championships in 1975 and 1976 and it is this group that made the Machine one of the greatest teams the game has ever seen. The fabled Great Eight starting lineup was born out of a favor a manager asked of his team captain.
