A block design test is a subtest on many IQ test batteries used as part of assessment of human intelligence. It is thought to tap spatial visualization ability and motor skill. The test-taker uses hand movements to rearrange blocks that have various color patterns on different sides to match a pattern.

Statistics 514: Block Designs Example An experiment was designed to study the performance of four different detergents in cleaning clothes. The following “cleanness” readings (higher=cleaner) were obtained with specially designed equipment for three different types of common stains. Is there a difference between the detergents? Stain 1 ...
In this design, a set of experimental units is grouped (blocked) in a way that minimizes the variability among the units within groups (blocks). The objective is to keep the experimental error within each block as well as possible.
Block designs: randomize the units within each block to the treatments. We want to test g treatments. There are b blocks of units available, each block contains k = rg units. Within each block, the k = rg units are randomized to the g treatments, r units each.
In the introductory example, a block was given by an individual subject. The randomized complete block design (RCBD) uses a restricted randomization scheme: Within every block, e.g., at each location, the \(g\) treatments are randomized to the \(g\) experimental units, e.g., plots of land.
One hundred and one years ago, Samuel Kohs published the manual for his Block Design Test (BDT), in which a person has to rearrange colored blocks to recreate visual designs of increasing difficulty (Kohs, 1920).
