Boer commandos fought alongside Fengu, British settlers, Khoi-khoi and other ethnic groups in units which were often mixed. Light, mobile commandos were undeniably better-suited than the slow-moving columns of imperial troops, for warfare in the rough frontier mountains.
6 Μαρ 2023 · More significantly, some 4,000 Boer fighters – equivalent to 10 per cent of their army’s strength – were taken prisoner at Paardeberg. It was the first real British victory of the war, and its last set-piece battle – a triumph of brute force and superior numbers rather than of tactical ingenuity.
The Boer Republics declared war on 11th October 1899 and the conflict ended on 31st May 1902, a duration of 2 years and 8 months. There were three distinct phases to the War: Stage 1 - Boer offensive. At first, the Boer republican fighters were successful in three major offensives.
The accurate fire of the Boer gunners and rifle marksmen from all the surrounding hills took its heavy toll amongst the British troops. Several attacks with bayonets were made by the British, but all were fought off under heavy casualties by the Boer fighters on the summit.
