non-fire sizing p Figure 1. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII sets out requirements for standard pressure vessels (left) and the relief valves protecting them (right) as a percentage of the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP).
Too often pressure relief valve sizes are determined by merely matching the size of an existing available vessel nozzle, or the size of an existing pipe line connection. Correct and comprehensive pressure relief valve sizing is a complex multi-step process that should follow the following stepwise approach: 1.
Brian Grinestaff shares key insights into selecting and sizing relief valves to ensure boiler safety.
Emerson has designed and has available to customers a computer sizing program for pressure relief valves, PRV2SIZE (Pressure Relief Valve and Vent Sizing Software). The use of this comprehensive program allows an accurate and documented determination of such parameters as pressure relief valve orifice area and maximum available flow.
For steam boilers, a small overpressure is required, usually 3% or 5%. For most other applications, 10% overpressure is required, but according to API 520, for special applications such as fire protection, larger valves with overpressures of 20% are allowed.
