History. The Etna post office, just west of Bullard, was granted in 1867, although settlers had been in the vicinity since the early 1850s. John and Emma Bullard arrived about 1870. A new post office named Hewsville was opened in the Bullards' store in 1881.
20 Σεπ 2023 · By 1890 the population was 200, and businesses included a sawmill, two general stores, a physician, a smithy and wagon shop, and a telegraph office. John Bullard owned a cotton gin and gristmill. There was also a local school, a Baptist church, and a Methodist church.
History of Bullard Texas. The William Pitt Loftin family settled in the area around 1850, and the Etna post office, located to the west of the current town, opened in 1867. In 1870 John and Emma Eugenia Erwin Bullard settled in the area and in 1881 opened the Hewsville post office in his general store.

On this site, the historic town well of Bullard marks the origin of the community. In 1883, the Kansas and Gulf Short Line railroad extended tracks from Tyler to Lufkin, and the town of Bullard, named for postmaster John Henry Bullard, supplanted the earlier communities of Etna and Hewsville.
From Bullard, Texas to either coast there was indigenous culture. They were as varied as the landscapes they inhabited, from the dense forests of the northeast to the expansive prairies in the heartland, and the arid deserts of the southwest to the rugged coastlines of the northwest.
Bullard, located in southern Smith County, distinguishes its origins with a historical marker commemorating the town well, source of reliable waters and instrumental in the community’s success throughout the late 1800s.
