Badgers are fossorial animals, which means they burrow underground. When excavating, badgers use their long, thick front claws to break fresh ground while their back legs kick out the excess dirt. They are known to dig faster than any mammal, including a man with a shovel.
The burrowing owl is a ground-dwelling bird with distinctive long legs, a short tail, and very serious-looking eyes. It is further characterized by its lack of ear tufts. The feathers are a sandy brown color above, while the breast area is beige with spotted bars.
The Burrowing Owl is the only owl active both day and night. It is closely associated with prairie dogs and other burrowing mammals. In Texas, it’s breeding is mostly restricted to the western part of the state and the Panhandle area.
Plenty of snowbirds visit South Texas this time of year to enjoy the mild weather and sunshine, but not every winged species can be spotted by looking up at the sky. During the daytime, ground-dwelling Western burrowing owls can be found near their underground homes to stay safe from predators.
