Cædmon's Hymn is a short Old English poem attributed to Cædmon, a supposedly illiterate and unmusical cow-herder who was, according to the Northumbrian monk Bede (d. 735), miraculously empowered to sing in honour of God the Creator. The poem is Cædmon's only known composition.
"Cædmon's Hymn" was composed sometime between 658 and 680 AD and a ppears to be the oldest extant poem in the English language. According to the Venerable Bede (673-735), Cædmon was an illiterate herdsman who was given the gift of poetic composition by an angel.

The hymn itself was composed in the mid- or late-7th century and so is the earliest surviving Old English poem. Bede records that Caedmon was an illiterate farmer working for a monastery who at first avoided singing.
