As part of the Economic Action Plan 2012, the Government announced that it will phase out the penny from Canada's coinage system. While the cent will remain Canada's smallest unit for pricing goods and services, the Royal Canadian Mint will no longer distribute pennies as of February 4, 2013.
4 Φεβ 2013 · To help consumers, businesses, charities and financial institutions to plan, a transition date of February 4, 2013 has been set after which the Royal Canadian Mint will no longer distribute pennies. On this date, businesses will be encouraged to begin rounding cash transactions.
The phase-out of the penny will have no impact on cheque payments or electronic transactions. Moreover, the penny will retain its value indefinitely, and can continue to be used in cash transactions with businesses that choose to accept them.
