11 Οκτ 2024 · Several diseases are caused by fleas and ticks. Below, we look at some flea and tick diseases in cats, including what you can do to avoid them and the most likely treatments.
Fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) are the most common external parasite to affect cats. They feed on the blood of their host and can transmit several diseases as well as flea allergy dermatitis and anemia. The adult flea makes up 5% of the flea population, the remainder of the life-cycle is spent in the environment.
However, most of the fleas found on both dogs and cats are cat fleas. Fleas cause severe irritation in animals and humans. They can also cause anemia (low red blood cells levels) and transmit a wide variety of diseases, including tapeworm infections, bacterial infections, and the typhus-like rickettsiae.
The risk that cat fleas pose to humans is also consequential, since these tiny insects can harbor such zoonotic agents as those that cause such human diseases as cat-scratch disease (Bartonella henselae), murine typhus, and plague.
Fleas are the most common of all external feline parasites, and the consequences of infestation will be terribly uncomfortable for most cats and can be the source of deadly disease for some. Flea bites cause horrible itching, and a hypersensitive cat's incessant scratching may open wounds in the skin that are vulnerable to serious infection.
In addition to their role as pests in dogs and cats, cat fleas are responsible for a number of diseases. They can cause flea bite dermatitis and the transmission of dog tapeworm [ 9 ] to name a few.
