The cave's most famous formation was the butterfly. It was the only known formation like it in the world. It was formed by two fishtail helictite growths that share the same attachment point of the cave wall.

The butterfly pictured above has been a trademark for the Caverns of Sonora since 1960. It truly looks like a butterfly has alighted upon the crystallized walls of the cavern.

You will get to see ‘Snake Pit’, which is a dense collection of helictites, and don’t miss the ‘Butterfly’ which two fishtail helictite growths have formed. The Butterfly is a unique formation, but, unfortunately, a part of the right-wing broke off in 2016.
Located 15 miles southwest of Sonora, Texas on I-10, the Caverns of Sonora marks the halfway point between San Antonio, TX and Big Bend National Park. Visitors come close and personal with this highly decorated cave system on intimate guided tours.
On November 21, 2006, the Caverns of Sonora’s trademark formation, The Butterfly, was vandalized. The top portion of the right wing on the Butterfly was broken off and stolen. Since this occurred, Texas cave owners have called for strengthening of the laws protecting caves and other natural landmarks of Texas.
