In this population, a suggested treatment regimen based on clinical experience is intravenous acyclovir (10–15 mg/kg every 8 hours) for 10–14 days, followed by oral valacyclovir 1 gram po three times a day for 4–6 weeks (Palay et al., 1991).

The total dose should not exceed 1 gram 3 times daily. Therapy should be initiated at the earliest sign or symptom.

Description. Valacyclovir is used to treat herpes virus infections, including herpes labialis (also known as cold sores), herpes zoster (also known as shingles), and herpes simplex (also known as genital herpes) in adults. It is also used to treat chickenpox and cold sores in children.
