Pontiac Correctional Center, established in June 1871, is an Illinois Department of Corrections maximum security prison (Level 1) for adult males in Pontiac, Illinois. The prison also has a medium security unit that houses medium to minimum security inmates and is classified as Level 3.
The deadliest prison riot in Illinois history broke out on July 22, 1978, at Pontiac Correctional Center, leaving three guards dead. Correctional Officer, military veteran and newlywed Robert Conkle, 22, of Graymont was pronounced dead on arrival at St. James Hospital in Pontiac at 10:10 AM.
Seventeen inmates were charged with the murders of Correctional Officers Robert J. Conkle, 22, Stanley Cole, 47, both of Pontiac, and Lieutenant William N. Thomas, 49, of Saunemin. None of the inmates charged in the brutal murders were convicted.
Correctional Officer Stanley Cole, Lieutenant William Thomas and Correctional Officer Robert Conkle were killed during a riot at the Pontiac Correctional Center. Around 9:00 am, about 500 inmates were returning to their cells in the North Cell House when a riot erupted.

25 Ιουλ 1978 · The dead guards were identified as Robert Conkle, 22, R.R. 1, Pontiac; Stanley Cole, 47, 620 W. Water St., Pontiac; and William Thomas, Saunemin. The guards were stabbed to death with makeshift knives shortly after the riot broke out.
