My grandmother makes our family and Italian Easter cookie called a Cududua (sp-???). Our family is from Sicily so this could be it. The way we make them is in a horseshoe shape with the egg in the middle and tips slit.

My nonna made these in various shapes and I distictly remember the "horeshoe" and these were decorated the same as you describe. I've been researching these across the internet and have come up with different recipes to try.
