The h-index is an author-level metric that measures both the productivity and citation impact of the publications, initially used for an individual scientist or scholar. The h-index correlates with success indicators such as winning the Nobel Prize, being accepted for research fellowships and holding positions at top universities. [1]

12 Δεκ 2008 · Bornmann & Daniel (2005) and Bornmann et al have shown that the average h‐index values of accepted and rejected applicants for biomedicine research fellowships differ statistically significantly, while van Raan (2006) found that the h index “relates in a quite comparable way with peer judgments” for 147 Dutch research groups in chemistry.
30 Ιουλ 2013 · In the words of Bornmann, an academic cannot have a high h-index without publishing a substantial number of highly cited papers, as the index favours those who publish a continuous stream of papers with lasting impact. To get a higher h index, an individual needs at least 2 h+1 extra citations.

There are several simple and sophisticated scientometric indicators generally applied in the literature (e.g. total number of publications and citations, citations per journal paper, relative citedness indexes, Hirsch index, etc.), which may characterize the publications of scientists both qualitatively and quantitatively.
