Demodectic mange may occur in older dogs because the immune system often declines with age. Dogs who have a weakened immune system due to illness, malnutrition, or certain medications are also susceptible to demodectic mange.
In older dogs, a similar condition can occur, but indicates either a medication or underlying condition is compromising the immune system. Cancers such as lymphosarcoma, melanoma can suppress the immune system, along with diseases like Cushing’s and diabetes.

27 Οκτ 2021 · Demodectic mange, also known as demodicosis or “red mange”, is caused by a cigar-shaped, microscopic mite called Demodex canis. These mites are transmitted from mother to pup within the first few days of life.
An older dog should not get demodicosis unless there is an underlying problem with the immune system. In such cases, demodicosis is considered an indication to seek a more serious hidden condition such as cancer, liver or kidney disease, or an immune-suppressive hormone imbalance.
Three forms of demodicosis are seen in dogs: localized demodectic mange, juvenile-onset generalized demodicosis, and adult-onset generalized demodicosis. Localized demodicosis is seen in dogs usually <1 year old, and most of these cases resolve spontaneously.
Demodectic mange is not caused by dirty kennels or home. It is generally a disease affecting young dogs that have inadequate or poorly developed immune systems or older dogs that are suffering from a weakened immune system. The demodectic mite spends its entire life on the dog.
