It happens when one of your intervertebral discs (the fluid-filled cushions that are between bones in the spine, called vertebrae) moves out of place. Rather than being aligned with the edges of the vertebrae, the disc bulges over.
A herniated (slipped or bulging) disk occurs when the soft, jelly-like center of a disk in your spine pushes against and leaks out of its outer ring. This can lead to pain, numbness and weakness in your neck, back or legs.
