Parliamentary legislation, including the Civil and Commercial codes, is today the principal source of law in the Dominican Republic. While custom is technically considered a primary source of law, in practice custom is more often than not routinely dismissed as of slight importance.
The Dominican Republic is a Social and Democratic State of Law, organized in the form of a single Republic, bases on the respect of human dignity, fundamental rights, work, popular sovereignty, and the separation and independence of the public powers.
