Mature or "old-growth" Douglas-fir forest is the primary habitat of the red tree vole (Arborimus longicaudus) and the spotted owl (Strix occidentalis). Home range requirements for breeding pairs of spotted owls are at least 400 hectares (4.0 km 2 ; 990 acres) of old growth.
Coast Douglas fir forest habitat extends from California up into British Columbia and from the Klamath and Cascade mountain ranges west to the Pacific Ocean. This species is commonly mixed in with other trees including tanoak, Pacific madrone, Ponderosa pine, incense cedar, white fir, and black oak.
Habitat. Native Range. The latitudinal range of Douglas-fir is the greatest of any commercial conifer of western North America. Its native range, extending from latitude 19° to 55° N., resembles an inverted V with uneven sides.
