In emergency rooms across the United States, people are treated for burns, loss of consciousness, and eye injuries caused by indoor tanning. Getting a base tan cannot prevent sunburn.
Indoor tanning is dangerous: Tanning beds don’t offer a safe alternative to sunlight; they raise the risk for skin cancers. One study observing 63 women diagnosed with melanoma before age 30 found that 61 of them – that’s 97 percent — used tanning beds.
Indoor tanning increases the risk of skin cancer [36,46,47], augments the risk for sunburn, and accelerates photoaging . Interestingly, indoor tanning practices are greatly influenced by parental acceptance and peer participation [48,49].

Tanning bed radiation is often thought of as a substitute for natural UV radiation despite differences in the maximum doses, UV content, body sites exposed, and patterns of melanoma that arise.
