Ernest Van "Pop" Stoneman (May 25, 1893 – June 14, 1968) [1] was an American musician, ranked among the prominent recording artists of country music's first commercial decade.
Patriarch of a legendary musical family, Ernest Van “Pop” Stoneman helped establish country music’s viability during its first wave of commercial success. Convinced he could play and sing better than other musicians who preceded him on disc, he journeyed to New York in 1924 to record for OKeh Records.
