UNESCO promotes global reflections and standards on ethical issues in science and technology, especially in the life sciences. It has two statutory bodies in bioethics, the International Bioethics Committee and the Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee, and supports other projects and activities in the field.
This report by the World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST) explores the challenges and principles of science governance and the science-society relationship in the post-2015 era. It proposes some priorities and recommendations to promote ethical research and innovation, open access, public participation and local knowledge.
UNESCO’s work in ethics of science and technology refl ects these global concerns. It examines such progress in light of ethical considerations rooted in the cultural, legal, philosophical and religious heritage of the various human communities. UNESCO’s activities in ethics of science and technology take many forms and cover much ground.
