Eugene Onegin is a well-known example of lyric opera, to which Tchaikovsky added music of a dramatic nature. The story concerns a selfish hero who lives to regret his blasé rejection of a young woman's love and his careless incitement of a fatal duel with his best friend.

When Olga’s fiancé, the poet Lensky, arrives with his friend Eugene Onegin, a mysterious dandy with all the trappings of a man of the world, Tatiana immediately falls in love with him.
We find ourselves at the country estate of Madam Larina, a middle-aged widow with two daughters, Olga and Tatyana. Think Chekhov country, beautiful spring surroundings but exceedingly dull for young Russian people. Larina and the nurse Filippyevna are sitting outside.

Based on Alexander Pushkin’s 1833 novel-in-verse concerning the ill-fated love of Tatyana Larina and the eponymous antihero, Eugene Onegin is, oddly, a love story without seemingly much love. Yet it explores, amongst its various ideas, themes of duty and friendship, and the overwhelming force of love.
