How to use the MATCH function in Excel to search for a specified item in a range of cells, returning the relative position of that item in the range.
MATCH is an Excel function used to locate the position of a lookup value in a row, column, or table. MATCH supports approximate and exact matching, and wildcards (* ?) for partial matches. Often, MATCH is combined with the INDEX function to retrieve a value at a matched position.
Compares two text strings and returns TRUE if they are exactly the same, FALSE otherwise. EXACT is case-sensitive but ignores formatting differences. Use EXACT to test text being entered into a document.
This example shows how to use INDEX and MATCH to get information from a table based on an exact match. In the example shown, the formula in cell H6 is: =INDEX(B5:E16,MATCH(H4,B5:B16,0),2)
It's actually quite easy to do with a lookup function. The VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP functions, together with INDEX and MATCH, are some of the most useful functions in Excel. Note: The Lookup Wizard feature is no longer available in Excel. Here's an example of how to use VLOOKUP. =VLOOKUP (B2,C2:E7,3,TRUE)
