Modern lists of pharaohs are based on historical records and, including Ancient Egyptian king lists and later histories, such as Manetho's Aegyptiaca, as well as archaeological evidence.

Though the term pharaoh referring to the king was not used in ancient Egypt until the New Kingdom period (c. 1539–c. 1077 bce), it is now used for all kings of ancient Egypt on the basis of its use in the Hebrew Bible. The list below includes Egyptian rulers.

The most famous are the Palermo Stone, which covers the period from the earliest dynasties to the middle of Dynasty 5; the Abydos Kinglist, which Seti I had carved on his temple at Abydos; and the Turin Canon, a papyrus that covers the period from the earliest dynasties to the reign of Ramesses II.

17 Απρ 2023 · Pharaoh Narmer. The first pharaoh of Egypt was Narmer, whose name written in hieroglyphics uses the symbol for catfish and chisel. Narmer is translated to raging or painful catfish. Narmer is a legendary figure in ancient Egyptian history, the story of how he unified Upper and Lower Egypt is fact woven with myth.
